How to Build a More Inclusive Brand

Let’s be real, the country is in the midst of a long overdue reckoning. And, as millions of people (ourselves included) are educating themselves about our history, institutions, cultural thought leaders, and policies, it’s hard to look at the scale of this conversation and not be inspired to participate. But, as much as taking a good hard look at our own behaviors is important, so is activating our businesses in the name of equality. So today, we wanted to share our thoughts on ways you can work to build a more inclusive brand. If you want to make sure your brand is an extension of your heart, read on and implement some of these ideas into your brand and marketing strategies.

Your Visual Brand Content

It should come as no surprise to hear that the visual part of your brand is the first to make an impression on people. As much as we would like for them to read our posts, they don’t always go that extra mile. So, when it comes to building a more inclusive brand, making sure that the images you share showcase all the love stories you have had the pleasure of telling so that more people see themselves in your work. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Showcase diverse couples even if the photos aren’t 100% on-brand (we’re all guilty of not sharing photos we didn’t feel were on brand)

  • Book creative partners and models with diverse points of view for styled shoots

  • Be intentional with the names you pick to include on stationery you are commissioning for styled shoots (shout out to our friend Twinkle and Toast for making this suggestion!)

  • Showcase different religious ceremonies from your portfolio (again, even if the photos are 100% on-brand)

The Language You Use

Even though we just said that not everyone reads every word you put out there, the words you choose say a lot. Whether it’s on how you describe yourself and your couples in your website copy or how you market your brand on social media, we encourage you to use gender-neutral language. For example, use “couples” instead of “bride and groom” and “wedding party” instead of “bridal party.”

What You Share on Social Media

Constantly figuring out what to share on social media has always been one of the things a lot of people struggle with. And, if you are looking for ways to infuse your values into what you share, here are some ideas to help you start standing on that soapbox!

  • Incorporate quotes from activists and thought leaders when you are posting things like #mondaymotivation

  • Reshare relevant news (ex. Court rulings, news about local policies, representatives, and candidates, political action items)

  • Create content to celebrate things like Loving Day, Pride Month, Black History Month and take the time to research something unique or personal to share about it

  • Highlight the work of wedding pros who you admire and who have a different approach and perspective

These ideas are just a jumping-off point and, if you have additional suggestions, we’d love to hear them! Get in touch with us at hello@sourcedco.com and we’ll update this article with your ideas!
